A Change in Direction

Over the past few weeks, it has become clear that we are in dire need of meaningful reform, even if these changes may not be universally welcomed. While open discussion within fandom is crucial, too much leniency may have been allowed in the name of free expression, even when discussions became uncomfortable or targeted those who are meant to be celebrated. This environment has led to a decline in morale and participation, compounded by ongoing technical issues.

This site was initially created to unite the community and celebrate the 3D Debuts, particularly when other platforms like Nyfco were unavailable. It was always intended to be a space for shared experiences, open discourse, and constructive criticism. Unfortunately, what was meant to foster healthy debate has too often devolved into toxic and destructive behavior. This has become a heavy burden—not just for me but also for third parties who should never have been drawn into these conflicts.

Many conversations have shifted away from constructive dialogue and honest venting. Instead, they are frequently driven by external actors with no genuine connection to the fandom, intent on creating division between fans, talents, and others. This platform will no longer serve as a host for such negativity.

The core purpose of this site remains to foster civil discussion. Genuine venting and honest opinions are more than welcomed and encouraged, but content aimed at causing harm or division will no longer be tolerated.

Regardless of whether the talents themselves visit this site, or not; It has become clear that toxic narratives and conspiracies discussed here have spilled over into the broader mainstream. As a result, hosting content that can be weaponized against the talents, fans, or allies is no longer viable.

Therefore, moderation will become more stringent moving forward. If you feel that your comment—or someone else’s—was unfairly removed, you are welcome to appeal the decision (on a post dedicated to private appeals). If the content is found to be civil and free from malicious intent, it will be restored. However, if this new approach no longer aligns with your preferences, alternative platforms like The Asylum, Kiwifarms, or Sukikira may be more suitable for your style of discussion.

In the coming days, I will be updating the site to better reflect these refreshed values and guidelines.

To those of you who have participated sincerely and constructively, I want to express my deep appreciation for your honesty, patience, and ongoing engagement. This site exists for you. Thank you.

Thank you adminnie, I’m sure if you already have concerns about being fair and equitable to both the users and the talents, you’ll move in a direction amenable to most of the userbase, if not all. I think updating the report function to have a reason required/double click to initiate would be the most needful, as we’ve had lots of comments in the past about people accidentally clicking report instead of reply and nuking posts that were fine. Or wanting to delete their own regretful post and saying “please help me report this so it goes down”. Allowing us to communicate to you *why* we want something removed would also help you keep a pulse check on the vibes and what kind of community we’re cultivating in here.

Thanks for keeping this weird anon site actually one of the nicer places on the internet to discuss vtubers.

Report

genuine question for the admin, are you still planning to be the sole moderator for the site or will other possible mods be considered? glad these changes are being made though i’ve seen some obvious bait get tons of replies when it should’ve just been reported and removed

Report

I want (and need) Mods but it is kind of a logistical nightmare, because of the nature of anonymity.

It also opens a second can of worms. If the mods are as anonymous as everyone else, how do we know they won’t abuse their power or follow their own agenda. I might experiment but I don’t want to open stuff to further drama either.

understandable, gl and thank you for the time you put into modding this site and trying to make it better admin o7

While I appreciate the sentiment and what you’re doing here, can you be more specific about what constitutes “content aimed at causing harm or division“ and “content that can be weaponized against the talents, fans, or allies”? Because I’ve seen multiple comments be removed the past few days that didn’t seem to fall into those categories.
Also, if there is a genuine concern in the community involving things like serious allegations, such as the recent Goldbullet situation, are those allowed to be discussed? I feel like those are important discussions to have, whether it’s to debunk them to stop rumours from spreading , or if they’re true, then figure out what to do about them, etc.

Yes! I will make a separate post answering and clarifying the many questions and challenges we will be facing.
To confirm, we have a Report Threshold which I move depending on how much “turbulence” we find ourselves in. Sometimes it will be 20 and sometimes 5 or even 3 depending on the situation and how bad it gets (right now for example there has been a lot of toxic activity of both trolls and people who reacted too strongly to Caspurr’s chat.)

Overall what I can tell everyone is personal attacks are mostly what we want to avoid. I will be transparent on what I have been approving and what I have kept in the Shadow Realm to give an idea to everyone.

Mostly if it is personal attacks, without a base for such allegations but simple anger. ie
“x is a lazy leech and wants to use xfandom as ATMs”
“[Name] is an insane bitch schizo”

Such are not helpful or something we can really encourage.

I do agree that warnings are important and concerning behaviors sometimes must be addressed. We will discuss further how we can handle it in a moderate and safe way without devolving into harassment of the parties involved.

I think this comment deserves a thorough answer.

Mod, I appreciate that you are trying to do something positive and I think you’ve expressed the sentiment behind your decision eloquently and in a way that’s pretty unassailable to any reasonable person. But if you aren’t willing to be transparent about what exactly moderation becoming “more stringent” means, then it may end up distorting the situation further.

For example (and JUST for an example), suppose that somebody notes that there seems to be a tendency for topics regarding Idol A to be removed, whereas similar topics regarding Idol B have been allowed to stay. That could cause resentment between fanbases. Because moderation only exists at one level on this forum — either a comment stays, or it is removed — it also becomes very easy for bad actors to accuse you, as a moderator, of bias. Because none of us know for sure why something is removed, or why X was removed but not Y, or if people are just making up fake reports/fake removals/clicking report in bad faith/etc.

I have a few suggestions, though I’m not sure whether they can be implemented on this site easily:

  • Using a report threshold to freeze a comment/comment thread, instead of entirely removing it. So there would be 2 “levels” of moderation — freezes, which are automated, and removals, which may be either automated or an active mod decision
  • Requiring people to explain briefly why they are reporting instead of a click being enough

I understand that this puts a lot of the burden on you, the moderator. But to be honest, I think that unclear moderation on a site like this can be worse than the site not existing at all, especially if the main use case of this site is supposed to be celebrating HolostarsEN — because there are so many other venues that can be used to the same effect (Discord, Twitter, Reddit — which you can essentially use anonymously too, via burner accounts).

We know toxicity and bad actors already exists here, and I think it’s important to prevent that from potentially being targeted at you, the moderator, or specific fans in the community. And that just isn’t possible without a certain level of transparency and active rules-setting. Pepperidge Farm remembers and all that — but the circumstances right now are getting uncannily similar to what happened to the Holostars subreddit years ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/Holostars/comments/wkkq19/added_tempus_flairs_and_updated_side_bar_links/ https://old.reddit.com/r/Holostars/comments/wkkgjb/tempus_schedules_week_0808/

So I really think you need to take steps to, if nothing else, protect yourself from the worst case scenario of this escalating into mod harassment. And one of the best ways to do that is establish transparency.

This is a very good elaboration to the comment, thank you. Unclear rules and moderation can be very harmful for the site and can easily be abused so I hope Admin clarifies soon.

For example, when does “venting” become “harassment”? If someone comes here to vent about say, not liking Jurard’s screaming, or expresses discomfort with Flayon turning things sexual in collabs (these are just random examples of complaints I’ve seen before, nothing targeted), I’m sure trigger happy anons who oshi them would gladly report that and cite harassment.

Personally, I believe those should be fair game but regardless, it’s important for the admin to draw a very clear line one way or the other as soon as possible.

Report

I know this site uses the html/css bones of nyfco so there might already be a report threshold in place. On there it was 7 reports for automatic removal.

Report

I always see this site as a fansite for the boys, not a site that spews a lot of hate which ends up driving some fans away. I don’t know how you’ll do it, admin. But I hope the changes will foster a healthier space for all Holostars fans.

thanks for the hard work admin nonnie
