I made a whole spreadsheet of backlogged media (books, shows, games) I want to grind through between now and the end of 2025. I’m 1.5 books down so far, and about 2/3rds done with the first game on the list. \o/
I’m also going to be trying to lose a pound every week, since I’m heavier than I’d like, by hitting the gym and counting my calories. This one technically started a little before New Years, and so far we’re on track.
Nothing about the series rings genuine due to how heavily franchised its become. Just a collection of hot button issues to garner the interest of the superficially socially conscious without promotion of any tangible new awareness or change. You feel good about youself watching it, it ends there.
The games stuff was great and they did a good job at keeping things fresh and interesting, while adding new players and features of the game to reflect our rapidly-changing world and society. Where I think the season fell flat was the cop/boat stuff. Sometimes it was exciting like them finding the door that was a bomb but for the most part the scenes never really went anywhere and anyone with half a brain would know from the start that the boat captain was on the frontman’s side so it all feels like a bit of a waste of time. The cop’s subplot in season 1 was MUCH stronger as we were learning stuff about the games alongside him, this time it’s just frustrating to watch him get strung along by someone who’s obviously in on it and we’re not learning anything new.
I’m part of the minority that actually liked all the voting scenes, they really captured the kinds of feelings I have on election day in the US; dread, anxiety, any hope I have at the beginning draining fast and feeling like my vote doesn’t even matter. The show feels more relevant than ever with all the Mangione CEO stuff, recent world elections, crypto/AI scams, trans rights issues, and drugs just to name a few. It’s a strong followup to the first season imo, even if nothing will have quite as much emotional weight and shock value as that first game of red light green light.
I thought it was okay. There are some good moments, but it doesn’t really have the emotional weight of the first season because it feels like the focus is mostly shifted to a bunch of new side characters we barely know anything about, with the exception of like the first and last episodes.
i thought the new side characters were great for showing even more sides of how people can end up in crippling debt, especially with scams that are so new like cryptocurrency, and long-standing issues in south korea like rental loan scams. when you have a show that’s focused on social commentary i think having a cast full of diverse backgrounds is a great way to hammer your point home. plus, we need to get to know these characters enough to understand why they vote in the ways that they do, why some of them switch their votes and why others hold on and refuse to change, it’s a really relevant issue in many parts of the world. if s1 was on the nose with its metaphors about people and what poverty can do to a person, s2 is even more so.
how does the violence of s2 compare to s1? i’m a bit squeamish with regards to that and had to watch s1 with my s.o. at the time but we’ve since broken up. i tried to bring up the idea of a s2 watch party with my gaming friends but i quickly realized that was a bad idea when they made their media illiteracy known (somehow missed all the economic commentary, only interested in the games, found the white people scene offensive lmao)
I’d say about the same as season 1 for violence. I mean, waves of people get shot in every round and some people get beaten and stabbed to death, but it’s no Saw movie
i just rewatched s1 and it’s actually quite a bit gorier than s2, way more than i remembered. aside from the obvious (people being shot and a couple stabbings) the violence isn’t as graphic in s2 and the games in s1 had much more brutal deaths (tug o war and the glass bridge for example, as someone with a fear of heights those episodes were HARD to watch but in s2 they mostly just get shot and that’s it). the s1 episode where they start killing each other in the night is more graphic and disturbing than pretty much anything in s2 imo. there’s also significantly less organ harvesting scenes in s2. the only s2 scene that sticks out to me is the men’s restroom scene, when you get to it you’ll know immediately.
having to explain some of the social commentary stuff to my less media-literate friend was definitely an experience so i feel you there lol. well maybe if you have any coworkers, family, or classmates you can watch with them? watching with friends is always more fun for me esp with big shows like this.

disclaimer: i play on PC only, so i don’t have any reference for console games. i’ve been enjoying fallout 4 again recently as a sandbox title— completely ignoring the story and just dicking around in settlements/with mods. it regularly drops down to like $7 US for the base game + all dlc. i also like wildermyth as something to jump in and out of, and if you like rhythm games and vocaloid, project diva has a PC port that’s been out for a few years and is actually moddable at this point.
mostly into stuff i can just pick up and play for a couple hours so been playing balatro, slay the spire, stardew valley, and holocure mostly. recently finished rise of the golden idol which is a pretty fun point and click style mystery puzzle game.
If you like deck builders i’ve been really into balatro, if not that and you’re looking for something more chill i’ve been playing tavern talk which is basically a western VN. Crime scene cleaner is also pretty relaxing to me.
